The 1988 batch of students of the School of Medical Sciences (SMS), Kwame Nkrumah University of Science and Technology (KNUST) has refurbished the Valco Hostel. The Valco Hostel is one of the oldest hostels at the Komfo Anokye Teaching Hospital, (KATH), Kumasi.
The hostel was rehabilitated at the cost of GH₵ 150,000 and this amount was contributed by 19 of the 43 members who form the 1988 year group. The renovation included the provision of furniture, window curtains and the painting of the dormitories and the Junior Common Room. This was to help reduce accommodation challenges at KATH.

Speaking at the inauguration, Prof. Adu Sarkodie, the Dean of the School of Medical Sciences, said the training of medical staff of the country should not be the sole responsibility of the government alone. Individuals, associations, alumni and all other institutions should emulate the kind gesture by the 1988 year group and help support the various institutions in the country. He added that the desire of the 1988 year group to refurbish the hostel was a step in the right direction.
Dr. Baffour Opoku, Hall Master of the Valco Hostel, also observed that there was the need for the provision of an effective water supply system, a stand-by generator, improvement of the road network and other facilities to support the increasing student population.
Dr. Joseph Adusei, Chairman of the Committee of Hall Administrators, commended the group for the initiative taken and pleaded that more of such donations be made so as to help lessen the burden on the government. He advised that there was the need to inculcate a culture of maintenance of the facilities at the hostel.
